Lost in Gulang Island

With all the exciting tourists and shouting vendors the first impression of Gulang island could be a "tourist trap". While once you step a bit away from the ferry and into the heart of the island you will find a Gulang island for locals.

The blooming flowers extending from inside the wall, the narrow and quiet lanes, the old buildings in different styles, the remote sound of pianos all slow down one's pace to adapt such an easy rhythm.

Locals' lives are not a bit disturbed by tourists: old people are playing cards in the tree shadows, grandparents are talking a walk with their grandchildren, women are gossiping while washing clothes. For loclas here is not the well known island for tourism, here is their idyllic homestead for every day life.

If you are brave enough, come to the island at night. The old buildings look more mysterious in neon light. The broken windows on the empty floor and the legends of "ghost house" haunt the endless imagination. Just don't forget to check the timetable for the last ferry return.

If you are interesed in the stories behind all these old buildings buy a "Enter Gulang Island" map in Babycat Cafe. Let the stories bring you tour to the old days and get you lost in the interlaced space time.
